Description
Supporting Movement and Well-being
The University of San Diego’s Wellness & Recreation Center brings together fitness, community, and holistic health in a dynamic, multi-level environment. Our lighting design supports this vision, creating a balanced experience that adapts to both high-energy activity and moments of rest.
Across training and fitness zones, lighting is calibrated for performance. Bright, uniform illumination supports visibility and focus, while minimizing glare in active, fast-paced environments. In contrast, wellness studios and lounge areas are defined by softer, warm ambient light, creating a more grounded and restorative atmosphere.
Daylight plays a central role, working in tandem with electric lighting to enhance spatial clarity and reduce energy use. Throughout the facility, layered lighting strategies help define different zones, guiding movement while maintaining a cohesive visual experience.
Outdoor terraces extend the environment beyond the building, with controlled accent lighting that supports evening use while maintaining a comfortable, inviting feel. Integrated controls ensure the entire system responds intuitively to occupancy and time of day.
The result is a flexible, human-centered environment where lighting supports both physical activity and overall well-being.
